ISSA Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and NCCPT-CPT Accredited Exam
Personal trainer certification from ISSA, with the NCCA-accredited NCCPT-CPT exam — anatomy, assessment, program design, technique and professional practice.
About the exam
ISSA's Certified Personal Trainer program can be finished two ways. The ISSA certification exam at the end of the online course is open-note, untimed and not proctored — and it is not NCCA-accredited. The NCCA-accredited credential is the NCCPT-CPT, offered by ISSA's subsidiary, the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers. Many gyms and employers look for an NCCA-accredited certification, so most candidates who want the widest recognition take the NCCPT exam.
The NCCPT-CPT exam is closed-book and proctored by Prometric, either at a test center or online with a live remote proctor, with a two-hour time limit and results right after you finish. You must be at least 18, hold a current CPR certification, and present an unexpired government-issued photo ID with a signature. You have 12 months from purchase to test, with one free six-month extension.
Our practice follows the six NCCPT content areas — applied science and functional anatomy, nutrition, client consultation and assessment, program design, exercise technique and instruction, and professional practice — with client scenarios, flashcards for the anatomy and training variables you must know cold, worked case studies, illustrated guides and timed practice tests.

Built on the NCCPT content areas
Every question is tagged to one of the six NCCPT-CPT domains — client scenarios, technique checks, program-design decisions and the anatomy behind them.
Hints that teach
Reveal the training principle, muscle action or screening rule behind the question when you're stuck. Every answer explains why the other choices fall short.

Exam-day game plan
How to walk in ready — and how to pace 140 questions in 2 hours.
Pacing checkpoints
Our timed test gives 140 questions in 2 hours to match NCCPT's two-hour limit. NCCPT's public pages don't list the exact item count; third-party guides report about 140–155 items including unscored pretest questions. Check the NCCPT Exam Policies and Procedures Manual for the current count.
The week before
- Take a full timed practice test, then review every miss by domain.
- Drill muscle actions and planes of motion — they appear in science, technique and program-design questions.
- Review screening red flags and when to refer for medical clearance.
- Confirm your Prometric appointment, ID and current CPR card.
During the test
- Read the client details first — age, history and goal usually decide the answer.
- Safety before performance: screen and clear before you test or train.
- Choose the answer that stays inside a trainer's scope — never diagnose or prescribe.
- Flag, guess and move on; about 51 seconds per question keeps you on pace.
Keep your head
- Some questions are unscored pretest items — a strange one may not count.
- A hard run of questions is normal; it doesn't mean you're failing.
- Change an answer only when you find a specific reason in the question.
After you test
- NCCPT certifications renew every two years with 2.0 CEUs (20 contact hours) and a current CPR certification.
- The NCCPT renewal fee is US$75 (US$50 each for two or more certifications) and is waived when all CEUs come from ISSA or NCCPT courses; renewing up to 30 days late adds US$25.
- ISSA's own certification also renews with 20 CEUs and current CPR/AED; ISSA's standard renewal fee is US$99, waived when all CEUs are ISSA courses.
- If you don't pass, NCCPT's retake rules and fees are in its Exam Policies and Procedures Manual.
