ACE Certified Personal Trainer Exam
The NCCA-accredited personal trainer exam from the American Council on Exercise — client-centered assessment, the ACE IFT® Model and real coaching scenarios.
About the exam
The ACE Certified Personal Trainer credential is one of the most widely recognized entry-level fitness certifications, and it is accredited by the NCCA. It qualifies you to assess apparently healthy clients and clients with health challenges who are cleared for exercise, design individualized programs, and coach behavior change within a personal trainer's scope of practice.
The exam has 150 multiple-choice questions — 125 scored and 25 unscored pilot items — in 3 hours, delivered at a test site or by live remote proctoring. Questions are built around ACE's 2023 content outline: Client Onboarding and Assessments (23%), Program Design and Implementation (31%), Program Modification and Progression (27%), and Risk Management, Professional Conduct, and Ethical Business Practices (19%). Results are reported on a 200–800 scale, and 500 is passing.
Our practice covers every domain with client scenarios built on the ACE Integrated Fitness Training® (IFT®) Model — the Base, Fitness and Performance cardiorespiratory phases, the Functional, Movement, Load and Performance training phases for muscular fitness, VT1/VT2 and the talk test — plus the ACE Mover Method™, behavior-change coaching, scope of practice, and emergency response. Every answer comes with a full explanation.

Exam-day game plan
How to walk in ready — and how to pace 150 questions in 3 hours.
Pacing checkpoints
Our timed test runs 150 questions in 3 hours, the real length and pace. The real exam's 25 pilot items are unscored; ours are all scored, and video-based items are represented as written scenarios.
The week before
- Take one full timed practice test 4–5 days out, then review your weakest domain.
- Know the IFT phases cold: Base/Fitness/Performance and Functional/Movement/Load/Performance.
- Review VT1/VT2, the talk test and the zones they create.
- Confirm your appointment, ID and CPR/AED card — or run the remote system check.
During the test
- Read every scenario for the client's goal, health status and phase before you look at the choices.
- Scope-of-practice questions: the trainer refers out for diagnosis, treatment and meal plans.
- When two answers look right, pick the one that is safest and most client-centered.
- Flag hard items, keep moving and answer everything — there's no penalty for guessing.
Keep your head
- 25 questions are unscored pilot items, so one strange question doesn't mean you're failing.
- If you blank, take three slow breaths and reread the question.
- Change an answer only when you find a specific reason in the scenario.
After you pass
- Your ACE certification is valid for two years.
- To recertify, earn 2.0 ACE-approved continuing education credits (20 hours) — including professional conduct and ethics — keep current CPR/AED with a hands-on skills check, and pay the renewal fee.
- Retakes within one year of your first attempt are offered at a reduced fee; confirm current fees in your ACE account.
- Passing also qualifies you to be listed on the U.S. Registry of Exercise Professionals (USREPS).
