About the exam

The NASM-CPT is one of the most widely recognized personal trainer certifications in the United States and is accredited by the NCCA. It tests whether you can screen and assess a client, build a progressive program with NASM's Optimum Performance Training (OPT) model, teach exercises safely, and coach behavior change within a trainer's scope of practice.

The exam has 120 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours; 100 are scored and 20 are unscored research items you can't identify. It's delivered by PSI at a test center or online with a remote proctor, and you need a scaled score of 70 to pass. You must hold current CPR and AED certification and a high school diploma or GED to sit for it.

Our practice follows NASM's six exam domains and the CPT7 textbook — overhead squat compensations and the muscles behind them, the five OPT phases and their acute variables, the corrective exercise continuum, nutrition within scope, and client communication — with flashcards, worked client cases, illustrated guides and timed practice tests.

Built on NASM's six domains

Every question is tagged to an exam domain and CPT7 topic — assessments, OPT programming, exercise technique, coaching and professional responsibility.

Hints that teach

Reveal the compensation, acute variable or coaching principle behind a question when you're stuck. Every answer is fully explained.

Adaptive practice

Questions steer toward your weakest domains, weighted like the real exam, and get harder as you improve.

Timed practice tests

100 questions in 100 minutes — the scored-question count at the real exam's pace — with full review.

Client cases, flashcards and guides

Work a client from intake to program, drill flashcards on muscles and variables, and explore illustrated guides hotspot by hotspot.

Progress in every domain

Each domain moves from Not started to Exam ready, so you know exactly what to study next.

The week before

  • Take one full timed practice test, then review every miss by domain.
  • Drill the overhead squat compensations with their overactive and underactive muscles.
  • Review the five OPT phases and their reps, sets, tempo and rest.
  • Confirm your PSI appointment, ID and that your CPR/AED card is current.

During the test

  • Read for the client's goal and the OPT phase — most program questions hinge on it.
  • For compensation questions, picture the movement before choosing muscles.
  • Stay inside scope: trainers don't diagnose, prescribe or create meal plans for medical conditions.
  • Flag hard items and move on — you have about a minute per question.

Keep your head

  • Twenty questions don't count, so a strange item may be a research question.
  • If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the question.
  • Change an answer only when you find a specific reason.

After you pass

  • Your digital certificate and badge are available within one business day.
  • Recertify every two years by earning 2.0 NASM-approved CEUs (20 contact hours).
  • 0.1 of those CEUs comes from keeping your CPR/AED certification current.
  • Upload documentation in the NASM Recertification Portal; recertification fees apply unless covered by a NASM membership.
