About the exam

Most states require or strongly encourage alcohol servers, bartenders and their managers to complete a responsible beverage service course and pass its exam. In California every on-premises server and manager must hold an RBS certification from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC); Texas, Florida and many other states use approved seller-server programs, and TIPS® is one of the most widely recognized national courses.

The content is consistent across programs: how alcohol is absorbed and how fast blood alcohol rises, the behavioral cues of intoxication, how to check an ID and spot a fake, how to slow or refuse service without a confrontation, and the legal duties and liability that come with serving. California's RBS exam is 50 multiple-choice questions with a 70% passing score; other programs set their own length and passing mark.

Our practice covers every one of those areas with realistic bar and restaurant scenarios — the guest who switches to doubles, the ID with a raised laminate edge, the friend ordering for a minor — plus flashcards, worked case walkthroughs, illustrated guides and a timed practice exam at the California RBS length. Where a rule is California-specific it is labeled; otherwise questions follow the general rules every state program teaches.

The exam blueprint

Built on the common content of state-approved server programs: California ABC Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) training required since July 1, 2022 (AB 1221/AB 82, with drink-spiking content added under AB 2402) and the TIPS® On-Premise curriculum. Checked October 2026. — Alcohol and the body, recognizing intoxication, checking IDs, preventing problems and intervening, and laws, liability and documentation. Tap a domain to see its topics.

Test at home or at a center

How you certify depends on your state. California servers register in the ABC RBS Portal, take an ABC-approved course, then pass the ABC exam online. Elsewhere you complete a state-approved or nationally recognized course such as TIPS® and pass its exam.

California RBS (ABC)

  • Register in the ABC RBS Portal ($3) and get your Server ID.
  • Complete training with an ABC-approved provider — online or in person.
  • Pass the 50-question ABC exam with 70% or better; you get 3 attempts within 30 days of training.
  • Certification lasts 3 years; renew within 90 days of expiration.

TIPS® and other state programs

  • Choose the course your state, employer or insurer accepts (On-Premise for bars and restaurants).
  • Exam length, passing score and certificate period vary by program and state.
  • Some states (e.g., Texas) issue certificates only through state-approved seller-server schools.
  • Keep a copy of your certificate — managers and inspectors may ask for it.

Exam-day game plan

How to walk in ready — and how to pace 50 questions in up to 2 hours — the California RBS exam length.

Pacing checkpoints

Our timed exam uses the California RBS length — 50 questions with up to 2 hours and a 70% pass line. TIPS® and other state exams set their own length; the content is the same.

Before the exam

  • Memorize the standard drink: 12 oz beer = 5 oz wine = 1.5 oz of 80-proof spirits.
  • Know your state's acceptable IDs and how to calculate the 21st birthday from a date of birth.
  • Review the behavioral cues in order: inhibitions, judgment, reactions, coordination.
  • California servers: confirm your RBS Portal registration and training completion first.

During the exam

  • Read for the safest legal choice — the exam rewards preventing harm, not keeping the guest happy.
  • Coffee, cold showers and time spent talking don't lower BAC; only time does.
  • When a question asks what to do first, look for the step that stops further service or protects people.
  • Take your time — the exam is self-paced and most people finish early.

Keep your head

  • If two answers look right, choose the one that follows house policy and the law, not a shortcut.
  • Remember the server and the business can both be liable.
  • Change an answer only when you find a specific reason.

After you pass

  • California RBS certification is valid for 3 years; ABC emails reminders and you can renew within 90 days of expiration by retraining and passing the exam again.
  • Your employer must be able to confirm your status — keep your Server ID or certificate handy.
  • TIPS® and other programs print an expiration date on the certificate; your state or employer may require renewal sooner.
  • Laws change: California added drink-spiking prevention to RBS training under AB 2402, so refresh even before you must.
