About the exam

The SIE tests the basic knowledge every securities professional needs: how capital markets work, the main products and their risks, how trading and customer accounts work, and the regulatory framework. Anyone 18 or older can take it without a firm sponsor, and a pass stays valid for four years — but on its own it doesn't register you. You pair it with a representative-level exam such as the Series 7 and association with a member firm.

The exam has 80 four-option multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 45 minutes: 75 scored and 5 unscored pretest items you can't identify (the pretest count dropped from 10 to 5 on October 27, 2025). Scores are scaled, and 70 passes.

Our practice covers all four sections of FINRA's October 2025 outline with scenario questions on products, orders, accounts and prohibited conduct, plus flashcards, case simulations where a client's account unfolds with every decision, and interactive illustrated guides to the market structure and product families you need.

The week before

  • Take one full-length timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then rest.
  • Spend your last sessions on Products and Their Risks — it's 44% of the exam — and anything still below Proficient.
  • Drill the product comparisons: who issues it, how it's taxed, what risk it carries, who it suits.
  • Confirm your appointment and ID — or run Prometric's system check if you're testing online.

During the exam

  • Read the whole question and find the cue: best, first, most likely, except, not.
  • Watch for EXCEPT and NOT questions — they flip what you're looking for.
  • Pick your best answer, flag it and move on; revisit flags at the end.
  • Answer every question — there's no penalty for guessing.
  • 5 questions are unscored pretest items you can't identify, so give every one your best.

Keep your head

  • A few nerves sharpen focus. If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the question.
  • You're measured against a fixed standard — a scaled 70 passes — not other test-takers.
  • Change an answer only when you find a real reason in the question.

After you pass

  • Your SIE pass stays valid for 4 years.
  • The SIE alone doesn't register you — once you're registered with a firm, FINRA's annual Regulatory Element continuing education applies.
  • Next step: a representative-level exam such as the Series 7, taken with a member firm's sponsorship.
