SHRM-SCP® Certification
SHRM's senior credential for HR leaders who set strategy, shape culture and advise the C-suite.
About the exam
The SHRM-SCP is for senior HR professionals: people who develop HR strategy, lead the function and link people decisions to business results. It's built on the same SHRM BASK as the SHRM-CP, but every question is pitched at a strategic level — what an HR leader should do, recommend or put in place.
Half the exam tests behavioral competencies — leadership and navigation, ethical practice, an inclusive mindset, relationship management, communication, business acumen, consultation and analytical aptitude. The other half tests HR knowledge across three domains: People, Organization and Workplace, including U.S. employment law.
About 40% of the items are situational judgment questions: a short workplace scenario and four reasonable-looking responses, where you pick the most effective one. They reward the answer an experienced HR leader would choose — collaborative, ethical, data-informed and aligned to the business.

Testing at a Prometric center
SHRM exams are offered in two windows a year — May 1 to July 15, 2026 and December 1, 2026 to February 15, 2027 — at Prometric test centers. Apply by the early-bird deadline to save $49.
Before you book
- Apply on shrm.org for a testing window; early-bird applications for the Dec 2026 – Feb 2027 window closed Aug 31, standard applications run to Dec 24, 2026.
- Once approved, you'll get an Authorization-to-Test letter — then schedule your seat with Prometric right away; popular dates fill up.
- Your name on the application must match your ID exactly.
- Need testing accommodations? Request them with your application.
On exam day
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early with current government-issued photo ID.
- Phones, watches, bags and notes go in a locker.
- Budget 4 hours total: tutorial, two timed sections and a short survey.
- Time left in section one doesn't carry over to section two — and you can't go back once a section is closed.
Exam-day game plan
How to walk in ready — and how to pace 134 questions in 3 hours 40 minutes.
Pacing checkpoints
Each section is 67 questions in 110 minutes. Hit these checkpoints and you'll have time to revisit flagged questions before each section closes.
The week before
- Take one full-length timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then rest.
- Spend your last sessions on anything still below Proficient — usually the Business cluster and U.S. employment law.
- Review the big federal laws: Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, NLRA, OSHA, ERISA/COBRA.
- Confirm your Prometric appointment and route.
During the exam
- For situational judgment items, pick the most effective response — not just a possible one. Favor actions that gather facts, involve the right people and fix the root cause.
- Watch for answers that are legal but harm trust, or decisive but skip the investigation.
- Pick your best answer, flag it and move on; revisit flags before the section ends.
- Answer every question — there's no penalty for guessing.
- 24 questions are unscored field-test items you can't identify.
Keep your head
- A few nerves sharpen focus. If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the scenario.
- You're measured against a fixed standard, not other test-takers.
- Change an answer only when you find a real reason in the stem.
Keeping your SHRM-SCP
- Certification lasts 3 years, ending on the last day of your birth month in year three.
- Recertify with 60 professional development credits (PDCs), or by retaking the exam in your final year.
- PDCs come from education, work projects and volunteering — SHRM caps some categories.
- There's a recertification fee; SHRM members pay less.
