About the exam

The Series 66 qualifies you as both a securities agent and an investment adviser representative under state law — the same result as passing the Series 63 and Series 65. It's built for registered reps who also give fee-based advice. You can sit it without a sponsor, but to register on the basis of the 66 you must also have passed the SIE and Series 7.

The exam has 110 multiple-choice questions in 150 minutes: 100 scored and 10 unscored pretest items. You pass by answering 73 of the 100 scored questions correctly (73%). The laws and ethics section is 45% of the exam — the heaviest weighting of any NASAA exam.

Our practice covers all four sections of NASAA's June 2023 test specifications with scenario questions on state registration, fiduciary duty, client strategies and investment products, plus flashcards, case simulations where a dual-registered rep's choices play out under state law, and interactive illustrated guides to who must register and who is exempt.

The week before

  • Take one full-length timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then rest.
  • Spend most of your last sessions on Laws, Regulations and Guidelines — it's 45% of the exam.
  • Make a one-page sheet of who's a broker-dealer, agent, adviser or IAR — and the exclusions and exemptions for each.
  • Confirm your Prometric appointment, ID and route.

During the exam

  • Read the whole question and find the cue: best, first, most suitable, except, not.
  • Ask who the person is — agent, adviser or IAR — and who regulates them before you pick an answer.
  • When two answers look right, choose the one that puts the client's interest first and is fully disclosed.
  • Pick your best answer, flag it and move on; revisit flags at the end.
  • Answer every question — there's no penalty for guessing.

Keep your head

  • A few nerves sharpen focus. If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the question.
  • You're measured against a fixed standard — 73 of 100 passes — not other test-takers.
  • Change an answer only when you find a real reason in the question.

After you pass

  • Your pass qualifies you for 2 years — register within that window or you'll need to retest.
  • Keep up FINRA's annual Regulatory Element CE as an agent, and IAR continuing education (12 credits a year) in states that have adopted NASAA's rule.
  • Next step: register as an agent and IAR — you'll need the SIE and Series 7 on file as well.
