Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE®) — CPhT
The national exam for the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential — drugs, federal law, safety and the math of filling prescriptions.
About the exam
The PTCE is the exam behind PTCB's Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, the pharmacy technician certification most widely recognized by state boards of pharmacy and employers. It tests what a technician needs to fill prescriptions safely: drug names and classes, federal controlled-substance and supply-chain rules, error prevention, and the calculations and data on every label.
Since January 6, 2026 the exam follows a new content outline. Medications is 35% of the scored questions, Federal Requirements grew to 18.75% (now including Drug Supply Chain Security Act tracing and quarantine), Patient Safety and Quality Assurance is 23.75%, and Order Entry and Processing is 22.5%. Alligation, narrow-therapeutic-index lists and hands-on non-sterile compounding steps were dropped from the outline; the exam format itself did not change.
Our practice follows the 2026 outline knowledge area by knowledge area — brand/generic recall, DEA schedules and forms, DSCSA, look-alike/sound-alike traps, Sig codes and days'-supply math — with flashcards, worked pharmacy scenarios, illustrated guides and timed 90-question practice exams.

Every question is tagged to one of PTCB's four domains and its knowledge areas — including the new DSCSA and therapeutic-duplication content.
Hints that teach
Reveal the rule, schedule, conversion or brand name behind the question when you're stuck. Every answer explains why the other choices are wrong.
Adaptive practice
Questions steer toward your weakest knowledge areas, weighted like the real exam, and get harder as you improve.
Timed practice exams
90 questions in 1 hour 50 minutes — the real PTCE pace — with full review afterward.
Flashcards, cases and guides
Brand/generic flashcards, worked pharmacy-counter scenarios and illustrated guides to schedules, labels and calculations.

Each domain moves from Not started to Exam ready, so you know exactly what to study next.
Test at home or at a center
Apply and pay through your PTCB account. Once your application is approved you'll get instructions to schedule the PTCE with Pearson VUE.
At a Pearson VUE test center
- Schedule after PTCB approves your application and emails your authorization.
- Bring unexpired government-issued photo ID that exactly matches the name on your PTCB account.
- An on-screen calculator is provided; personal items stay in a locker.
- Plan on about 2 hours: tutorial, the 1-hour 50-minute exam, and a short survey.
Before you apply
- Pathway 1: finish a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (or within 60 days of it).
- Pathway 2: document at least 500 hours of pharmacy technician work experience, completed before you apply.
- Disclose any criminal or state board actions — PTCB reviews them before approval.
- Check your state board of pharmacy's own registration or licensure rules; CPhT doesn't replace them.
Exam-day game plan
How to walk in ready — and how to pace 90 questions in 1 hour 50 minutes.
Pacing checkpoints
Our timed test gives 90 questions in 110 minutes, the real PTCE length and pace. On the real exam, 10 of the 90 are unscored pretest items.
The week before
- Take one full timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then review your misses.
- Drill the top 200 brand/generic pairs and their classes — Medications is still the biggest domain.
- Re-learn DEA schedules and forms (222, 106, 41) and the new DSCSA tracing rules.
- Practice days'-supply, dose-by-weight and conversion problems until they're automatic.
During the test
- About 73 seconds per question — flag long calculations and come back.
- Read the whole prescription in a stem: patient, drug, strength, Sig, quantity, refills.
- Write down units for every calculation on your scratch board.
- Answer every question — there's no penalty for guessing.
Keep your head
- Ten questions are unscored pretest items — a strange one may not even count.
- If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the question.
- Change an answer only when you find a specific reason.
Keeping your CPhT
- CPhT certification renews every 2 years.
- Complete continuing education during each 2-year cycle, including 1 hour of pharmacy law and 1 hour of patient safety — check the exact hour total in your PTCB account.
- Up to 5 CE hours may come from pharmacist-targeted ("P") ACPE programs if the topic is on the PTCE outline; hours can't carry over between cycles.
- Recertification fee is $49 (applications open 60 days before expiration; a $25 late fee applies after the first day of your expiration month). Missed it? Reinstatement within 1 year costs $89 plus 1 extra law CE hour.
