Praxis® Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7–12 (5624)
The pedagogy exam for new teachers in grades 7–12 — how students learn, how to plan and teach, how to assess, and how to grow as a professional.
About the exam
The Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Grades 7–12 test (5624) measures the pedagogical knowledge a beginning teacher needs in middle and high school classrooms. Many states require a PLT test for initial licensure; check your state for which grade band and passing score apply.
The test covers four areas — Students as Learners, the Instructional Process, Assessment, and Professional Development, Leadership and Community — through 70 selected-response questions. A fifth area, worth 25% of your score, asks you to analyze two case histories of real classrooms and write four short constructed responses.
Expect theory applied to practice: Piaget and Vygotsky in a lesson plan, IDEA and Section 504 in a parent conference, validity and reliability in a grading decision. Our practice uses the same scenario style, including case-history questions in multiple-choice form.

Test at home or at a center
Praxis tests are developed by ETS and offered year-round. Register at praxis.ets.org and check your state's requirements and passing score before you book.
At home — online proctored
- A live proctor watches through your webcam for the whole test.
- Use a Windows or Mac computer with a webcam, microphone and steady internet; run the ETS equipment check first.
- Test alone in a private room with a clear desk — whiteboard or plastic sheet only, as ETS allows.
- Show the room and your desk on camera before you start.
At a Prometric test center
- Arrive about 30 minutes early with current government-issued photo ID matching your registration.
- Phones, bags, watches and notes go in a locker.
- Fewer moving parts: no home tech check, no room scan, no Wi-Fi worries.
- Retest policies apply — check the current Praxis bulletin before you rebook.
Exam-day game plan
How to walk in ready — and how to pace 70 selected-response questions in 70 minutes.
Pacing checkpoints
Our practice exams cover the 70 selected-response questions at about a minute each. On the real test, save about 50 minutes for the four case-history responses.
The week before
- Take one full-length timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then rest.
- Review the big theorists (Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, Bruner, Bandura, Skinner, Maslow, Kohlberg, Gardner) and what each looks like in a classroom.
- Know IDEA, Section 504, FERPA and the difference between formative, summative, norm- and criterion-referenced assessment.
- Confirm your appointment, ID and route — or run the online system check.
During the exam
- Read the whole question and find the cue: best, first, most appropriate, most likely.
- For case histories, find the student's specific need first, then pick the strategy that addresses it with evidence from the case.
- Favor answers that are student-centered, data-informed and inclusive.
- Pick your best answer, flag it and move on; revisit flags at the end.
- Answer every multiple-choice question — there's no penalty for guessing.
Keep your head
- A few nerves sharpen focus. If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the question.
- You're measured against a fixed passing standard, not other test-takers.
- Change an answer only when you find a real reason in the question.
After you pass
- ETS keeps Praxis scores reportable for 10 years; your state may set its own recency limit.
- Send scores to your state licensing agency and preparation program when you register — or add recipients later for a fee.
- Licensure renewal is set by your state, not ETS.
