About the exam

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators measures reading, writing and mathematics skills. Many educator preparation programs and states use it for admission or licensure; others accept SAT, ACT or GRE scores instead, so check your program first.

Core is three separate subtests. Reading (5713) is 56 questions in 85 minutes; Writing (5723) is 40 selected-response questions plus two essays in 100 minutes; Mathematics (5733) is 56 questions in 90 minutes with an on-screen calculator. You can take them together as the combined test (5752) or one at a time, and each is passed separately.

Our practice covers every multiple-choice and numeric-entry area of all three subtests, with explanations for every answer and essay-planning help in the flashcards and guides.

How we track your progress

Every blueprint domain moves through five levels as you study:

  3. DevelopingAt least 5 answered and 50% or better on your recent questions.
  4. ProficientAt least 15 answered and 70% or better on your recent questions.
  5. Exam readyAt least 25 answered, 80% or better recently, and holding up on hard questions.

Questions built on the official framework

Every question is tagged to a Praxis Core content area and topic — passages, grammar in context, research skills, and real-world math.

Hints that teach

Reveal the principle behind the question when you're stuck. Every answer comes with the full rationale.

Adaptive practice

Questions steer toward your weakest areas, weighted like the real exam, and get harder as you get stronger.

Timed practice exams

Framework-weighted exams at a realistic pace — all three subtests at the real pace — with a pacing indicator and full review.

Flashcards, case simulations and guides

120 flashcards, 8 unfolding classroom or school cases where every decision shows its consequence, and interactive illustrated guides you explore hotspot by hotspot.

Progress in every content area

Each area moves from Not started to Exam ready, so you know exactly what to study next.

Test at home or at a center

Praxis tests are developed by ETS and offered year-round. Register at praxis.ets.org and check your state's requirements and passing score before you book.

At home — online proctored

  • A live proctor watches through your webcam for the whole test.
  • Use a Windows or Mac computer with a webcam, microphone and steady internet; run the ETS equipment check first.
  • Test alone in a private room with a clear desk — whiteboard or plastic sheet only, as ETS allows.
  • Show the room and your desk on camera before you start.

At a Prometric test center

  • Arrive about 30 minutes early with current government-issued photo ID matching your registration.
  • Phones, bags, watches and notes go in a locker.
  • Fewer moving parts: no home tech check, no room scan, no Wi-Fi worries.
  • Retest policies apply — check the current Praxis bulletin before you rebook.

Exam-day game plan

How to walk in ready — and how to pace 152 questions across the three subtests.

Pacing checkpoints

Checkpoints assume all three subtests in one sitting. Taking one subtest? Reading runs about 90 seconds a question, Math about 95 seconds.

The week before

  • Take one full-length timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then rest.
  • Review grammar rules that trip people up: agreement, pronoun reference, modifiers, parallelism, comma splices.
  • Practice percent, ratio, unit-rate and data-display problems without rushing the arithmetic.
  • Confirm your appointment, ID and route — or run the online system check.

During the exam

  • Read the whole question and find the cue: best, first, most appropriate, most likely.
  • Reading: answer from the passage, not from what you already know about the topic.
  • Writing: plan each essay for two or three minutes — clear thesis, two strong reasons, a counterpoint.
  • Pick your best answer, flag it and move on; revisit flags at the end.
  • Answer every multiple-choice question — there's no penalty for guessing.

Keep your head

  • A few nerves sharpen focus. If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the question.
  • You're measured against a fixed passing standard, not other test-takers.
  • Change an answer only when you find a real reason in the question.

After you pass

  • ETS keeps Praxis scores reportable for 10 years; programs and states may set their own recency limits.
  • Each subtest is passed separately — retake only the one you need.
  • Some states allow a composite score across the three subtests; check your state.
