About the exam

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam from the National Healthcareer Association is one of the most widely held phlebotomy credentials in the United States. Employers and many state programs use it to confirm you can collect blood safely, correctly and in a way that protects the specimen.

The exam has 120 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours: 100 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items mixed in throughout. Questions follow NHA's test plan, built from its 2024 job analysis — Safety and Compliance (26%), Patient Preparation (20%), Routine Blood Collections (28%), Special Collections (12%) and Processing (14%). Results are reported on a scaled score from 200 to 500; 390 passes.

Our practice covers every domain with scenario questions written to CLSI collection standards and OSHA rules — order of draw, tube additives, site selection, complications, blood cultures, newborn screening, point-of-care testing, chain of custody and specimen handling — plus flashcards, case walkthroughs, illustrated guides and timed 100-question practice exams.

Real draw-room scenarios

Every question is tagged to one of NHA's five test-plan domains — identifying the patient, choosing the site, following the order of draw, handling a fainting patient, processing and shipping the specimen.

Exam-critical hints

Reveal the rule that unlocks the question — the tube color and additive, the tourniquet limit, the heel-stick site, the specimen that goes on ice. Every answer comes with the full rationale.

Adaptive practice

Questions steer toward your weakest domains, weighted like the real test plan, and get harder as you get stronger.

Timed practice exams

100 questions in 100 minutes — the same pace as the scored part of the real 2-hour exam — with full review afterward.

Cases, flashcards and guides

Walk through draws step by step, drill tube colors and special-handling rules with flashcards, and explore illustrated guides to veins, tubes and capillary sites.

Progress in every domain

Each domain moves from Not started to Exam ready, so you know exactly what to study next.

Test at home or at a center

Create an account at nhanow.com, confirm your eligibility and pay the exam fee, then schedule. NHA exams are delivered on computer at your training school, at a PSI test center, or online with a live remote proctor.

At your school or a PSI test center

  • Many training programs host the NHA exam on site for their graduates.
  • Bring current, unexpired government-issued photo ID that matches your NHA account name.
  • Phones, notes and bags stay outside the testing room.
  • Arrive early — late arrivals may forfeit the appointment.

Online with live remote proctoring

  • Test from home on a computer that passes NHA's system check.
  • Use a private, quiet room with a clear desk and a working webcam and microphone.
  • The proctor checks your ID and the room before you start.
  • Leaving camera view or talking can end the exam.

The week before

  • Take one full timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then review every miss.
  • Say the order of draw out loud until it's automatic: culture, citrate, serum, heparin, EDTA, glycolytic inhibitor.
  • Drill special handling: what goes on ice, what stays warm, what's protected from light.
  • Confirm your appointment, ID and — for remote testing — your system check.

During the test

  • Read the whole scenario — the patient's age, the test ordered and the timing often decide the answer.
  • Patient safety and correct identification come first in any 'what should you do first' question.
  • When two answers look right, pick the one that follows the standard procedure, not a shortcut.
  • Answer every question; you aren't penalized for guessing.

Keep your head

  • 20 questions don't count, and you can't tell which — don't let a strange one shake you.
  • If you blank, take three slow breaths and reread the stem for the key detail.
  • Change an answer only when you find a specific reason.

Keeping your CPT

  • NHA certification is valid for 2 years.
  • Renew by completing 10 continuing education credits and paying the renewal fee before your expiration date.
  • NHA offers CE through its own learning platform; check which outside CE counts before you take it.
  • Confirm current fees and any retake waiting periods in your NHA account — they're set by NHA and can change.
