About the exam

The ANCC Family Nurse Practitioner exam certifies new FNPs for entry-level primary care across the lifespan. Pass it and you earn the FNP-BC™ credential, accepted by state boards of nursing for APRN licensure and by employers and payers nationwide.

ANCC's Test Content Outline is organized by the steps of care, not by body system: Assessment 17%, Diagnosis 17%, Planning 19%, Implementation 33% and Evaluation 13% of the 150 scored questions. Alongside clinical decisions it asks about scope of practice, legal and ethical issues, documentation, research appraisal, culturally responsive care and therapeutic communication — more professional-role content than the AANPCB exam.

ANCC launches an updated outline on October 30, 2026, after a testing pause from October 19 to 29. Implementation grows by 7 questions and now explicitly includes responsible, ethical use of technology including artificial intelligence; risk assessment adds social determinants and sexual health. QuizMe organizes the content by clinical area plus a professional-issues area, with weights estimated from the official outline, and shares its question bank with our AANPCB FNP prep.

How we track your progress

Every blueprint domain moves through five levels as you study:

  2. Getting startedFirst questions answered — not enough yet to judge.
  3. DevelopingAt least 5 answered and 50% or better on your recent questions.
  4. ProficientAt least 15 answered and 70% or better on your recent questions.
  5. Exam readyAt least 25 answered, 80% or better recently, and holding up on hard questions.

The exam blueprint

ANCC FNP Test Content Outline effective October 30, 2026 (the 2022 outline applies to exams taken on or before October 18, 2026) — 150 scored items. The official outline is by process (Assessment 17%, Diagnosis 17%, Planning 19%, Implementation 33%, Evaluation 13%) across the lifespan; our 11 areas — 10 clinical plus professional issues — and their weights are estimates mapped from it.. Primary-care scenarios across the lifespan

Every question is tagged to one of 11 clinical areas and its topics — from newborn visits and prenatal care to older adults on ten medications — written to current guidelines.

Exam-critical hints

Reveal the clinical pearl that unlocks the question — the red-flag finding, the first-line drug, the screening interval, the guideline threshold. Every answer comes with the full rationale.

Adaptive testing

Questions steer toward your weakest areas, weighted by how much each counts on the ANCC exam, and get harder as you get stronger.

Timed practice exams

Blueprint-weighted exams at the real pace — 175 questions in 3.5 hours — with a live pacing indicator and a full review.

Flashcards, case simulations and guides

Flashcards for drugs, screening intervals and red flags, unfolding clinic cases where the chart updates with every decision, and interactive illustrated guides.

Progress for every clinical area

Each area moves from Not started to Getting started, Developing, Proficient and Exam ready — so you know exactly what to study next.

Test at home or at a center

ANCC delivers the FNP-BC exam by computer at Prometric test centers. After ANCC approves your application you get an Authorization to Test and have 120 days to schedule and sit the exam. ANCC's handbook describes test-center delivery only.

At a Prometric test center

  • Arrive about 30 minutes early for check-in.
  • Bring current, unexpired government-issued photo ID with the same name as your application.
  • Phones, bags, watches and notes go in a locker; expect a check-in photo and security screening.
  • Schedule early — popular dates near graduation fill fast.
  • If you don't pass, you can retest after 60 days, up to 3 times in any 12-month period.
  • No testing October 19–29, 2026 while ANCC switches to the new outline.

Exam-day game plan

How to walk in ready — and how to pace 175 questions in 3.5 hours (full length, incl. 25 pretest-style items).

Pacing checkpoints

Hit these and you finish with time to revisit your flagged questions. Our timed practice exams run at this same pace.

The week before

  • Take one full-length timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then rest.
  • Don't skip the professional-issues area: scope of practice, consent, confidentiality, ethics, research appraisal and technology questions are a big part of ANCC's Implementation domain.
  • Drill first-line drugs, screening ages and intervals, and patient-education points for common chronic diseases.
  • Check which outline your date falls under: on or before October 18, 2026 is the 2022 outline; October 30, 2026 onward is the new one.

Exam morning

  • Eat a real breakfast with protein; go easy on caffeine.
  • Arrive at the Prometric center about 30 minutes early with government-issued photo ID that exactly matches the name on your application.
  • Use the restroom right before you start.

During the exam

  • Read the whole stem and find the cue: first, best, most appropriate, initial, most likely.
  • Note the patient's age, sex and pregnancy status first — they change the answer on screening, drugs and differentials.
  • Pick the evidence-based, guideline-concordant answer for a primary-care setting, not what you'd see in the hospital.
  • Professional-role questions reward the answer that protects the patient, respects autonomy, stays inside your scope and follows the evidence.
  • Pick your best answer, flag it and move on. Revisit flags at the end.
  • Answer every question — there's no penalty for guessing.

Keep your head

  • A few nerves sharpen focus. If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the stem.
  • You're measured against a fixed passing standard, not other test-takers.
  • Change an answer only when you find a real reason in the stem.

Keeping your FNP-BC

  • Certification lasts 5 years; you can renew online up to a year before it expires.
  • Every APRN renewal needs 75 continuing-education hours, including 25 in pharmacotherapeutics, plus additional professional-development activities from ANCC's renewal categories (such as practice hours, precepting, academic credit or presentations).
  • Check ANCC's renewal requirements for your specialty before you start logging hours — the details are set in the renewal handbook.
  • Renewal costs $375 for non-members and $275 for ANA members.
