Cosmetology Theory (Written) Examination — NIC national exam and state board written tests
The written theory exam for a cosmetology license — infection control, science, hair, skin and nails, built on the NIC national outline.
About the exam
Every state requires a written theory exam before it issues a cosmetology license. Most states use the national written exam developed by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC); a few, including California, use a comparable national exam from PSI. Both test the same core: infection control and safety, the science behind hair, skin and nails, and the principles of every service you'll perform.
The NIC Cosmetology Theory exam has 110 multiple-choice questions — 100 scored and 10 unscored — with a 90-minute time limit. Its outline weights Scientific Concepts at 35%, Hair Care and Services at 45%, and Skin Care and Nail Care at 10% each. California's written exam has 100 scored and 10 pretest questions in 120 minutes and is now the only exam required for a California license; most other states also give a practical exam and some add a state laws and rules test.
Our practice follows the NIC outline topic by topic — disinfection and blood-exposure procedures, hair, skin and nail structure and disorders, pH and chemical reactions, haircutting and design, hair color and lightening, permanent waving and relaxers, facials, hair removal, makeup, manicures, pedicures and enhancements — with flashcards, worked case walkthroughs, illustrated guides and timed practice.

Test at home or at a center
You apply for your license and exam through your state board of cosmetology after finishing your state's required training hours. The board approves you and tells you which testing vendor to schedule with.
At a test center
- The written theory exam is computer-based at a test center chosen by your state's vendor.
- Bring the government-issued photo ID your board's bulletin requires; your name must match your application.
- Notes, phones, printed materials and other devices aren't allowed in the testing room.
- Many states offer the exam in several languages — California offers English, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese and Simplified Chinese.
Your state's other requirements
- Most states also require a practical exam where you perform services on a mannequin or model.
- Some states add a separate laws-and-rules exam on that state's regulations.
- Training hours, fees and retake rules are set by each state board — read your board's candidate bulletin.
- California requires only the written exam since January 1, 2022.
Exam-day game plan
How to walk in ready — and how to pace 110 questions in 90 minutes (NIC theory format).
Pacing checkpoints
Our timed test uses the NIC format — 110 questions in 90 minutes. California's written exam gives 120 minutes for 110 questions; other state exams may differ.
The week before
- Take one full timed practice test, then review every miss by content area.
- Re-study infection control — it's tested in every domain, not just science.
- Review the pH scale, peroxide volumes and the chemistry of waving, relaxing and lightening.
- Confirm your test center, time and the ID your board requires.
During the test
- When a question asks what to do first, safety and infection control usually come first.
- Watch for contraindications in client scenarios — the right answer is often to not perform the service.
- Eliminate answers that skip a required test, such as a patch test before an aniline derivative tint.
- Answer every question; mark hard ones and come back if time allows.
Keep your head
- A few unfamiliar questions are normal — 10 of them don't even count.
- If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the question.
- Change an answer only when you find a real reason in the question.
After you pass
- Your state board issues the license once you pass every required exam and meet its other requirements.
- Licenses renew on a schedule set by your state, often every two years.
- Some states require continuing education for renewal; California does not currently require CE for cosmetology renewal — check your board.
- If you move, many states offer licensure by endorsement for licensees from other states.
