About the exam

The aPHR is HRCI's knowledge-based credential for people new to HR. There's no experience or degree requirement: it shows you understand the foundations — hiring, training, pay and benefits, employee relations and the laws that govern them.

The exam follows HRCI's aPHR exam content outline, organized into five functional areas. Compliance & Risk Management and Employee Relations together make up nearly half the exam, so U.S. employment law matters.

Most questions are traditional multiple choice, with some alternative formats such as multiple-response and scenario items. It tests knowledge and comprehension — knowing the rule and recognizing when it applies.

Every question is tagged to one of the 5 aPHR functional areas and its topics — from the law that applies to the next step HR should take.

Adaptive practice

Questions steer toward your weakest areas, weighted like the real exam, and get harder as you get stronger.

Timed practice exams

Blueprint-weighted exams at the real pace — 90 questions in 1 hour 45 minutes — with a pacing indicator and full review.

Flashcards, cases and guides

120 flashcards, 8 unfolding workplace cases where the case file updates with every decision, and interactive illustrated guides to the models and laws you need.

The week before

  • Take one full-length timed practice exam 3–5 days out, then rest.
  • Spend your last sessions on the heaviest areas and anything still below Proficient.
  • Review the big federal laws and their thresholds — Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, NLRA, OSHA, ERISA/COBRA, WARN.
  • Testing online? Run the OnVUE system test and set up your room.

During the exam

  • Read the whole stem and find the cue: first, best, most likely, most appropriate.
  • When two answers look right, choose the one that is compliant and addresses the root cause.
  • Pick your best answer, flag it and move on. Revisit flags at the end.
  • Answer every question — there's no penalty for guessing.
  • 25 questions are unscored pretest items you can't identify.

Keep your head

  • A few nerves sharpen focus. If you freeze, take three slow breaths and reread the stem.
  • Your score is scaled against a fixed standard — 500 passes — not other test-takers.
  • If you need another try, HRCI requires a 90-day wait between attempts.

Keeping your aPHR

  • Certification lasts 3 years.
  • Recertify with 45 HR recertification credits — including at least one ethics credit — or by retaking the exam.
  • Credits come from continuing education, on-the-job projects, teaching and more.
  • There's a recertification fee due when you submit.
