About the exam

The CPC is AAPC's core credential for professional (physician and outpatient) medical coders and the most widely held coding certification in the United States. It shows employers you can read a medical record and assign accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II codes, apply coding guidelines and modifiers, and stay inside payer and compliance rules.

The exam is 100 multiple-choice questions in one four-hour sitting, and you need 70% to pass. It is open book: you bring the AMA CPT Professional Edition plus an ICD-10-CM and a HCPCS Level II book (current or preceding year, one copy of each). Most questions are coding scenarios, and the exam ends with medical record cases you code from start to finish. You can test online with a live remote proctor or at a testing center in the United States.

Our practice follows the CPC's knowledge areas — E/M, anesthesia, every surgery series, radiology, pathology and laboratory, medicine, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, coding guidelines, compliance, terminology and anatomy — with original operative-note and office-visit scenarios, explanations that walk through the code book logic, and timed 100-question practice exams at the real pace. CPT code numbers appear where you must choose a code; we describe services in our own words rather than reproducing AMA descriptors.

How we track your progress

Every blueprint domain moves through five levels as you study:

  1. Not startedNo questions answered in this domain yet.
  2. Getting startedFirst questions answered — not enough yet to judge.
  3. DevelopingAt least 5 answered and 50% or better on your recent questions.
  4. ProficientAt least 15 answered and 70% or better on your recent questions.
  5. Exam readyAt least 25 answered, 80% or better recently, and holding up on hard questions.

Code-it-from-the-record questions

Original operative notes, office visits and reports that make you pick the right CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS codes and modifiers — the way the CPC asks.

Hints that point to the guideline

Stuck? Reveal the section note, guideline or code-book convention that decides the question. Every answer explains why the other codes are wrong.

Adaptive practice

Questions steer toward your weakest knowledge areas, weighted like the real exam, and get harder as you get stronger.

Timed 100-question exams

100 questions in 4 hours — the real CPC pace — with a pacing indicator, full review and your score against the 70% pass mark.

Cases, flashcards and guides

Worked coding walkthroughs, flashcards for modifiers, guidelines and terminology, and illustrated guides you explore hotspot by hotspot.

Progress in every area

Each knowledge area moves from Not started to Exam ready, so you know exactly which section of the code book to study next.

Test at home or at a center

Buy your exam through your AAPC account (membership required), then schedule either an online remote-proctored session or a seat at a testing center. Bring or set up your approved code books before exam day — current-year books are recommended, but the preceding year's are allowed.

Online with a live remote proctor

  • Test from a private room with a reliable high-speed connection, a computer and an external webcam.
  • Use your printed code books or the platform's eBooks — check AAPC's current rules on tabs and notes in books.
  • eBook users get a clean library — your personal notes and tabs don't carry over.
  • Encoders and coding software such as Codify are not allowed.

At a testing center

  • Available only in the United States.
  • Bring government-issued photo ID that matches your AAPC account name.
  • Bring one copy each of your CPT Professional, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II books.
  • Plan for one continuous four-hour sitting.

Exam-day game plan

How to walk in ready — and how to pace 100 questions in 4 hours — the real CPC length and pace.

Pacing checkpoints

Our timed exam gives 100 questions in 240 minutes, the same length and pace as the real CPC. Have your code books open, just as you will on exam day.

The week before

  • Take a full timed practice exam with your actual code books, then fix what slowed you down.
  • Tab your CPT book by section and highlight the section guidelines — most answers live there.
  • Review modifier rules (25, 59/X{EPSU}, 51, 57, 24, 79, 26/TC) and E/M MDM tables one more time.
  • Confirm your appointment, ID, webcam and room setup for online testing.

During the exam

  • Read the answer choices first — then look only for the details that separate them.
  • Eliminate by the first code or the diagnosis that is clearly wrong, then verify the survivors in the book.
  • Check the Index, then the Tabular — never code from the index alone.
  • Watch for 'each additional' add-on codes, laterality and 7th characters.
  • Answer every question; there's no penalty for guessing.

Keep your head

  • At 2 minutes 24 seconds per question, skip a long case and come back.
  • If two choices look right, re-read the stem for site, size, approach or encounter type.
  • A few long scenarios are normal — the short terminology and anatomy items buy back time.

After you pass

  • If you don't yet have coding experience you receive CPC-A (apprentice). AAPC removes the A when you document qualifying experience or training — for example, an employment verification letter, an approved course certificate, or completing Practicode with 70% or better, which counts toward the two-year apprenticeship.
  • Keep an active AAPC membership to keep the credential.
  • Earn 36 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years.
  • New code sets arrive each January (CPT, HCPCS) and October (ICD-10-CM) — keep your books current.
